The O’Toole article is interesting, but I can’t buy its argument that the increasing number of cars is responsible for the declining number of hurricane deaths during the 20th century. Improved weather forecasting and communications were likely important as well. If every resident in 1900 Galveston had a car, how many would have known to evacuate?
Car drivers are not dependent?? I think not… all car drivers depend on the gov’t to build and maintain the roads, so they are indeed subsidized.
(A) I don’t trust figures reported by the Cuban government.
(B) Cuban losses to recent hurricanes may be low due the the fact that previous storms devastated all those who lived in vulnerable areas. So maybe few die in Cuba today because all the vulnerable were killed a decade ago.
(C) I’m told that many Marxists requard Cuba’s government as “Red Fascism” – just the overlay of Marxist rhetoric on a genuinely fascistic system (compared to “Black Fascism” ala Mussolini).
