What is America’s largest inland port?

This question came up last night when I was watching Jeopardy with Yana.  Try to guess before looking under the fold...

I thought it was Duluth, but sorry me that is not in the top twenty.  (Wasn’t it the right answer about fifty years ago?)  The correct answer is Huntington, on the Ohio River, with St. Louis as number two.  Here are the top twenty.

It says that “‘Inland Ports’ are ports that are located on rivers and do not handle deep draft ship traffic.” Which excludes everything on the Great Lakes, such as Duluth. I think if you could find the numbers for Great Lakes ports, Duluth and Chicago and the Port of Indiana and Detroit would all be up there, probably larger than Huntington, et al.

Yeah… I agree with Bergamot. My first thought was Seattle, since Puget Sound is so far inland (Maybe it is, but the link is bad, so I can’t see the list).

What about Portland? It is an inland, fresh-water port that is able to accommodate even the largest ocean-going ships. Ship sizes in Great Lakes ports are limited by Welland Canal clearances, while the Mississippi/Ohio river ports north of Baton Rouge can accommodate barges only.

Interesting, I had no idea.

Huntington is shockingly massive, bigger than Los Angeles in total tonage. Check out the stats here: http://www.aapa-ports.org/industryinfo/statistics.htm

Donald: “inland shipping” means barges and other shallow-draft, not-ocean-capable ships. I think Chicago and Indiana get deep-draft, ocean-going ships. the key here is that boats matter more than geography.

They only had to answer the name of the river, not the port itself. If I remember correctly, one contestant got the right answer.
