Here is one article. For me the essential Ligeti is the Horn Trio (most of all), the piano music, the two string quartets, and the cello and violin concerti. If you have a chance, go to your music library and check out the score for “Atmospheres”. Every stand in the orchestra has a part, doubled. At several points every instrument in the orchestra is playing a separate note.
More importantly, it makes for good music.
Can’t the piano etudes get a little bit of love here?
I’ll cast a vote for Lux aeterna here. The Requiem made an incredible impression on me the first time I heard it.
