Of course the fall of the Roman Empire left a huge vacuum which was “refilled” by the original inhabitants all over Europe.
many of whom were Celts, and the Celts had no written language. The only written records during the period 300-700AD would presumably be by chrchmen and monks who could write Latin and/or Greek. The emergence of French as a language occurred with the Edict of Strasbourg (782AD – if I remember right from lectures in Mediaeval French at Univ.)
I am particularly interested in the Celts who lived i n Switzerland and France and keep cuttings from newspapers (F & CH) whenever I see somme item of news. Like the discovery of five carnyx (trompettes de guerre des Celtes)at Naves as reported with photos in “Le Monde” of 27.11.2004.
