…the fraction of Kenyans who are satisfied with their personal health is
the same as the fraction of Britons and higher than the fraction of
Americans.  The US ranks 81st out of 115 countries in the fraction of
people who have confidence in their healthcare system, and has a lower
score than countries such as India, Iran, Malawi, or Sierra Leone.
While the strong relationship between life-satisfaction and income
gives some credence to the measures, the lack of such correlations for
health shows that happiness (or self-reported health) measures cannot
be regarded as useful summary indicators of human welfare in
international comparisons.

Maybe it can’t be regarded as a measure of human wealth, but it could still be a measure of human welfare. Wealth and purchasing power don’t have to be the be-all and end-all. Maybe people say they are satisfied because they are. Then again, maybe not.

My personal dissatisfaction has two causes

1. I have good coverage but it is easy to speculate how I might lose it and not be able to afford adequate medical care.

2. I see that others do not have the coverage that they need and are suffering for it.

For me this is the problem with US prosperity in general.

Marketing. This question should be asked at a time when there isn’t a huge ,arketing campaign going on to make us disatisfied with our health care.

Umm couldn’t it be that in those countries you’re more likely to die from your illnesses? That the people around to be surveyed are happy with the healthcare system because they haven’t had a serious illness yet? That the metrics are good, but that the sampling is bad?

That is very interesting but although I think I agree with Deaton’s conclusion, isn’t it an uncomfortable line for an economist to take?
