On a popular wristwatch a painted image of Mao Zedong waved his hand jerkily with every second. ‘He is not greeting you,’ the vendor grinned. ‘He is saying goodbye.’

I just finished Thubron’s book, and agree that it is excellent.
This is the watch (http://www.kaylorimports.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=459)
I am tempted to get one but the band is so ugly… and it is a wind-up watch so if I forget winding it up, Chairman Mao won’t bid me goodbye.
That watch is for sale *everywhere* you might visit as a westerner. Everywhere. After a while I began to think that Mao hadn’t died, he had just disaggregated and will forever keep (new, improved, capitalist) time in China.
effell, that was pretty damn funny. At least I am understood.
