I disagree, I thought the last picture was the best.
The ‘Only in Hawaii’ photo is quite wrong, picnics *in* the water are one
of the more frequently promoted activities in French Polynesia, if anything
Bora Bora is far more known for this than Hawaii. So hardly an ‘only in’ commentary.
(Now, in Bora Bora there will likely be FEWER PEOPLE on the ocean picnic but I don’t take it to be the point of the photo that there are say 4 tables instead of 2)
In the fitness center photo the man on the escalator is not just standing there. He’s walking. But he still takes the escalator.
Is the “Only in America” gym photo fake? I haven’t encountered too many outdoor escalators without some sort of cover. What happens when it rains? Makes me think it’s a Photoshop job.
The irony is that the US picture is likely that way to comply with handicapped access laws. I’ve never seen an escalator to a gym, but I have seen elevators to them if they have underground parking, which were needed to comply with disabled-access laws.
Also, I also suspect it’s photoshopped – escalators are always covered since they get shorted out in the rain.
The Chinese pool photo looks like a Massimo Vitali. Only moreso.

See here:
- “It is not a fake photo. As I said above, I go to this “gym.” There are several places, at least in San Diego, that have outdoor escalators. Neither rain nor bugs are plentiful here, but what little we do have of both don’t seem to bother the machinery at all.”
- “yea, the place is REAL not shopped. I also live nearby.”
- “… San Diego malls are mostly built as outdoor malls. You walk from storefront to storefront in an enclosed but outdoor place. And mall escalators are everywhere, as seen in this picture. Outdoor escalators are extremely common…”
There are several outdoor escalators at the Olympic museum in Switzerland
