I can report that the sugar high in children begins long before the sugar hits the bloodstream.

I went to the birthday party of a 1 year old last weekend. At the start of the party the boy was shy and clung to his mom, but as soon as he had a taste of his cupcake, he perked right up and became the life of the party. It was his first taste of refined sugar, and he loved it!

Did it ever occur to the researchers that a sweet “placebo” might have the same effect as sugar, that the endorphin rush from sugar comes from the sweet flavor, and a sweet placebo would trigger the same response. Doh! One of the most stupid papers I’ve seen in a while.

Alex is right, sugar affects your brain as soon as you taste it.
