Semicolons still have a functional place in the English language; even if I’m the only one left using them in my prose, I will continue to use them.

I don’t get the “blame it on English” part; we use semicolons all the time. (See!) It’s the Germans who almost never use them, though I wouldn’t think that would much affect French.

I predict the wink [ ;) ] may be more a more enduring use of the semicolon than the purpose for which it was intended.
