Regarding the NYC traffic, that list is misleading–the Cross Bronx Expressway/I95/GW Bridge is a mile-long stretch of road but is on there 7 times in the top 30. Similarly, Harlem River Drive is on there a couple times for a 1/2 mile stretch. The Van Wyck is also on there a couple times, but it should be it’s just so terrible.
The CBE is the top 10, just under different names, e.g. I95. It’s been a disaster as long as I can remember.
Why is the list so NYC-centric? Because they reacted to the great power that Robert Moses had to ram through infrastructure projects by making it nearly impossible to build anything anywhere. Case in point: the dithering about a replacement for the Tappan Zee bridge, which is – essentially – falling apart. Years (decades?) of planning; no actual solution anywhere on the horizon.
Although it doesn’t really slow down the traffic on I-5 itself, Seattle’s “Mercer Mess” is so badly designed that traversing the five blocks leading up to the freeway can take as much as 30 minutes.
If I remember correctly, though, Washington intentionally reports traffic data in a way that makes it impossible to compare with data reported by other states. Heh heh heh.
I’m intrigued by the electronic cigarettes as well. However, I’m apprehensive about making the capital investment due to the possible regulation/outlawing.
The Cross Bronx is a piece of shit to be sure. The entire stretch from the GW to New Haven was built with no concept of the number of vehicles the road would carry.
You must be kidding. The Kennedy merger on the I-90/94 is only 35 on the list?
The rest of us must really friggin suck with traffic. It takes a special kind of failure to make something worse than that. I can almost bike downtown faster than taking that highway on some days
