1. I had a friend who, when he worked for the post office, would answer almost any question with “I work for the post office.”

“So, got a big weekend planed?”
“I work for the post office.”

“Hey, did you have a good Christmas?”
“I work for the post office.”

“Want to meet for lunch one day?”
“I work for the post office.”

etc.

I think I’ll start answering all personal questions with. “I’m in grad school.” It is the ultimate answer. If it doesn’t tell you everything you need to know, then you could never understand.

Economists sometimes seem to argue that there are sometimes just rotten situations. We call some of these businesses. The post office is a rotten business. The rottenness is structural. This is remarkable considering many of them have been through graduate school. I have contemplated inventing the mailbox/shredder/waste basket. That should also tell you all you need to know. Every trip to the mail box is like going into the lab. The hope is palpable, followed quickly by crushing disappointment.

Re: Economics of Postal service:

I wish there was the equivalent of a “Do not call” list to prevent the receipt of junk mail.
