Charities in everything

Have you ever wondered what percent of charities involve actual positive externalities?

Susan spent months in front of her computer on MyFreeImplants.com,
a Web site where women who want breast augmentation can connect with
“benefactors” willing to contribute to the cause, sometimes a dollar at
a time. In May she was one of two Las Vegas women who went under the
knife on donations alone.

Do they also offer naming opportunities?  Here is the story.  The thanks go to a loyal MR reader, who by the way is now blogging again.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan, but, my donations will go to a more important charity with similar interests:

Perhaps to you, but if it makes all females want to become more attractive, perhaps it does provide some positive externalities.

So why aren’t there more women in economics again?

Interesting tidbit from the article:

Women on the site never actually get the money they raise. Instead, it’s held in a trust until they meet their surgery goal. When the surgery is complete, Moore pays the doctor directly.

So the site is already holding donations in escrow until they meet their target. How long before they implement full assurance contracts?

Yes the site is degrading and I’d rather see more donations towards breast cancer research or Friendly AI, but keep in mind that most pledges on Fundable.com are of the “help this stray puppy get vet surgery/a warm home” variety. Ooooooh, cute puppies, I so want to save them. Not.

The link to Jacqueline was well worth it for her link to Dr. Michael Wesch’s site, http://mediatedcultures.net

Thanks!

I just have to wonder what the tax implications of a donation to a charity like this is for both the donor and the recipient.

“I just have to wonder what the tax implications of a donation to a charity like this is for both the donor and the recipient.”

It should be none. Gifts are not considered income and are not taxed as gifts (the donor pays the tax) unless
it exceeds the annual exclusion. I can’t see donating tens of thousands so a stranger can go to
jiffy-boob, if I can’t have any of the benefits of the enhancement.
