#3 “He then called an end to the proceeding, with the ruling to follow at the court’s pleasure — probably quickly if fast-typing Judge Posner writes it.†
#6 “Ripping a Band-Aid off quickly causes less pain than pulling it away from the skin in a slow two-second tug.†
So don’t procrastinate when consigning Fast-Eddy Alderman to the Sin Bin.
Re #3: I hope MR readers know that when former Alderman Edward Vrdolyak is referred to as “Cicero Republican” this means Cicero, Illinois, a part of Cook County. The place was indirectly named for the great Roman senator Marcus Tullius Cicero but in no way is Vrdolyak a “Ciceronian Republican.”
Quick Correction: The Oscars are using an Alternative Vote (AV) voting system, not the Single Transferable Vote (STV) voting system. The difference is that STV is used in multi-member districts where there is more than one winner that is being elected. AV, on the other hand, is used in single-member districts where the voting process seeks to select a single winner that holds a majority of the electorates’ preferences. Therefore, the Oscars are using the AV voting system, not the STV system.
Actually, AV (or IRV, if you prefer) is the single-winner case of STV. So the Oscars use AV, IRV, or (single-winner) STV.
