Luck and disasters

Just two days ago I was trying to convince a group of my colleagues to come to Haiti with me for a three-day weekend outing.  Had we gone, we would have stayed in what is now the epicenter of the earthquake.  The hotel I had in mind…I believe it does not exist any more but has fallen down the hills into oblivion.  It is difficult for me to fathom what must be going on there and how it will continue to play out.  In addition to thousands of lives, much of the Haitian cultural heritage has been destroyed.  Here is an image of Simbi, god of healing.

Here is one reputable place to donate.  Here is another.

Haiti was a disaster before the earthquake.

Why do you find such destitute places to be so interesting?

This just after I read an item about how Haiti was one of only two places on the Caribbean (the other was Guyana) showing positive growth….

I’m glad your plans fell through.

I’m a little confused. Two days ago was Monday. So the three day weekend would have been this coming one, right?

Yet it’s phrased like you narrowly avoided danger.

Thanks for passing on the donation sites information. I hope more people will donate.

Thank you for the suggestions for where to donate. I simply went with the American Red Cross, specifying the money to go to International Relief.

I just donated. Hope others will do the same.

Mulp, what’s wrong with a culture that’s a “modern” invention? All living cultures are to a significant extent. Just imagine the loss of the U.S.’s cultural output from the last 100 years.

I think the idea is that if the quake had struck just a few days later…
