Cliff March 17, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Re: 6, this makes me think back to my college orientation, where the soon-to-be students stayed overnight in one of the dorms. I was mistakenly assigned to a room on the girls’ floor with two girls. I went to the people running the show, told them about the error, and got a new room assignment. A bunch of people standing around were all like “Oh DUDE, I’ll trade places with you!! What an idiot!” Like an orgy was going to break out because I was assigned to a room on the girls’ floor. Of course, maybe it was. I’ll never know now.

The Microsoft paper (4.) is a great read. I have a similar proposal, which is that it would be far more economically efficient to fund an international team of high-tech bounty hunters to capture or kill hackers, phishers, spammers, etc. than to fund McAfee, Symantec, Trend Micro, et al.

Do we dare comment on #2 link before we have tenure?

Matthew Yglesias March 17, 2010 at 3:51 pm

I keep clicking on various links to Yglesias in the expectation I will find something stimuluating or insightful which will challenge my libertarian philosophy. I keep coming up empty. I have no idea why he is so highly regarded.

I’m not really interested in challenging your libertarian philosophy. I think ideologically rigorous forms of libertarianism aren’t really refutable.

I can’t find a reason to care about this one way or another.

Me neither! But the Cato guy seemed to deem the fact that the center-right coalition sometimes wins elections in Sweden to be a decisive refutation of Barack Obama’s health care plan.

#6. Wow, my school (in California, one that Robin Hanson is familiar with) was ahead of its time. This arrangement dates back to at least the mid-80s.

I was just going to say the same thing. We’ve had mixed-gender dorm rooms for decades. We were all still frustrated geeks.

The Swedish Right. A distinguished Czech literary critic who lived his
later years in America used to express his puzzlement that in America
liberalism meant acceptance of a role for government in the economy
while in the Europe he had grown up in liberalism meant unfettered
markets. In Britain today, David Cameron, the Conservative leader who
might well be the Prime Minister of Britain in a few months assures
voters that he regards the National Health Service as an integral part
of the landscape. Cross the Atlantic, and Left and Right mean rather
different things. Dennis Kucinich might qualify as a leftist in
Europe but hardly any other American politician. The days when an
American socialist presidential candidate (Eugene Debs) could win
a million votes are a century behind us.

The problem is whether they find it easy to accommodate the changes. Good luck for the trial. I hope it runs well, as usual.

I think the economy is actually one of the worst things I’ve heard about. But it goes to show what humans will do to survive and what we will do for money. A great article to a tragic story. I wonder if they smuggle mens cologne into Gaza?

I have no idea about the background, but safe nuclear energy is about the biggest no-brainer I can think of, so on that score alone they’d have my vote. Actually, if a party said to me “give me 4 years and ALL we will do is clear the way for safe nuclear reactors” they’d have my vote.

The idea that mixed gender dorm rooms will lead to raunchy sexy times is so laughable it barely needs refutation. It’s like marriage, but less sexy!!!!
