Speaking of animals committing suicide. I always heard that doves have a mate for life. If one should happen to pass away, the mate that is left behind will fly into a wall, tree, in front of a car, etc. in order to “commit suicide”.

Whenever I see a lone dove, I often wonder if that is it’s last day on earth.

I was disappointed with the article about animal suicide. It didn’t really address the debate at all…It seemed more focused on framing the issue in terms of its role in the humane treatment of animals.

I don’t understand your critique. From what I understand you don’t disagree with the study’s conclusions, but rather that the study was done in the first place?

There’s the dog suicide bridge of Scotland.

I’m ok with links to things I don’t understand, but links I don’t understand because I lack the background in neuroscience? I didn’t expect that from this blog. At least I could keep up with the comments regarding the philosophy of science.

There are several ways of thinking about the differences
between Classical and Christian thought. I am not surprised
that Aquinas thought suicide sinful, whereas a Roman embraced it
under some circumstances. Aristotle’s story (Aquinas
integrated his ideas in his Theology) of the stallion which
committed suicide on realizing that he had been tricked into
mating with his mother was new to me. I did know that for
Aristotle Sophocles’ “Oedipus the King” was the quintessential
Greek tragedy.

I like the one about the sweatshop campaigns. Pretty good stuff
