What I’ve been listening to

Norwegian rocker Ida Maria and her debut album, Fortress Round My Heart.  Here is one excellent, manic track.

You have to wonder why they’re still making rock music when good wild music only flourishes during wild times overall. Watch the crime rate: when it trends back up, then it’ll be safe for young people to make fun music again. (Last crime wave lasted from 1957 to 1991.)

Manic song by a hard-edged female singer with a backing rock band — Blondie did it better with “X Offender.”

Not a big fan of the music video, but I like the song. It’s pretty catchy!

“I suspect the economy over the next decade will allow us to test your theory, but are you actually asserting we there hasn’t been good rock made in the last 19 years?”

Well the economy isn’t it; it’s how reckless and thrill-seeking people are in general. The homicide rate is the simplest indicator of that.

And yes, to a first approximation, little after 1991 is any good, aside from the revival of late ’70s / early ’80s rock that we had from about 2003 to 2006. I’m referring to success rate more than absolute counts: of all rock music made in a given year, what percent was great?

I enjoyed it quite a bit, and made it a favorite. I’m being concise so that no one thinks I wear suspenders. That would be more bothersome to me than being thought an ass, which appears to be the case.

Lol. You old people crack me up. Cutting edge? Nah…

I can’t wait until I am this out of touch some day.

I liked it. However, it could easily be a punk song from 30 years ago. I now have a teenage daughter who is into music like this. I have introduced her to a lot of music from the punk/new wave era which she says she likes. I told her you like it because it is not very different from the music you listen to now.

Alex,

What kind of search engine (or methodology) do you use to find your music?

Alex didn’t say it was cutting edge you idiots.

Enrique March 12, 2010 at 11:03 am

Hey stckl, did it ever occur to you that some of us were responding to the anon poster who DID call it ‘cutting edge’ and not Alex? Idiot.

This >> Blondie. I just checked out that “X Offender” song (what would we do without youtube?). Not manic.

I would like to say there is something about her music that is got an edge and an honesty. But I don’t see why the lyrics are horrible. They’re simple. Simplicity is grossly underrated.
