From Hugo Chavez:

Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on the planet Mars, Venezuela’s socialist President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday.

“I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,” Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.

For the pointer I thank Brandon Robison.

Reuters and you both are just employing a good poker face, right? I mean, you understand that Chavez was making a joke?

jk March 23, 2011 at 10:39 pm

No ,he was not

Gary March 22, 2011 at 10:49 pm

Was he probably joking? Sure. But I’ve learned not to underestimate the stupidity of Hugo Chavez.

The almost desperate willingness of people to be trolled is one of the great mysteries of human nature.

Eh. I’ve heard worse explanations for the Great Silence than that.

Roger Ebert is tweeting about your book now..

Great, another Ronald Reagan.

stuhlmann March 23, 2011 at 4:29 am

Chavez is right. There is currently no demand for life on Mars. Therefore the supply is also zero. The market rules.

anonygoat March 23, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I demand life on mars.

Ruprecht March 23, 2011 at 2:51 pm

That will be eight quadrillion dollars, delivery of life on mars guaranteed upon payment.

Andrew March 23, 2011 at 6:27 am

Is he saying capitalism is the great filter?

Andrew March 23, 2011 at 6:29 am

Interesting how he has always ‘said, heard.’ What other great insights does he talk to himself about?

Jim March 23, 2011 at 8:18 am

This would be hilariously laughable if Chavez weren’t a brutal dictator who hugs our President.

Dean Sayers March 23, 2011 at 9:26 am

At least his brutality is dull enough to miss out on US support.

Rich Berger March 23, 2011 at 8:38 am

Hey don’t mock the guy. I am sure he wouldn’t make a statement like this without consulting his experts at VASA.

Anotherphil March 23, 2011 at 8:39 am

Oh hell. My favorite Martian and capitalist pig, MIchael Moorer just got fodder for another cinematic screed.

The only thing is what’s the title? “Red Deaths”?

Hugh March 23, 2011 at 8:43 am

So Mars is in a Great Stagnation too.

The interesting information, the tonic on a note! but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,” Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.

marks not marx March 23, 2011 at 2:44 pm

The wide spread adoption of capitalism probably explains the Fermi paradox.

Balzar March 23, 2011 at 3:06 pm

makes a lot of sense. More sense than all of the yapping merkan wingnuts put together.

Verdical Driver March 23, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Once you fully commit to an ideology, that is how you interpret the universe.
