Economist Alarm Clock

From Mashable, seems to be a concept only…such an alarm clock could be illegal.

You could combine this with stickk and have money donated to a hated charity each minute you stayed in bed?

Kit Sunde May 30, 2011 at 7:46 am

You put one to many http:// in your mashable link, it should be: http://mashable.com/2011/05/29/money-shredding-alarm/

Did you notice the odd coincidence of the serial numbers?

Someone from the other side May 30, 2011 at 8:50 am

I fail to see how the clock itself could be illegal. Having it shred dollar bills might be, but not the clock + shredder itself.

Deflationary!

Why is destroying currency illegal? Seems like a very patriotic way to donate “money” to the rest of the citizens.

Yancey Ward May 30, 2011 at 10:05 am

If that were a real hundred dollar bill, he would have woken before 8:15.

The last time I checked the US Code, currency mutilation or destruction was not punishable unless done with intent to defraud. In any case, the chief destroyer and defrauder is the Fed.

Slightly OT, but I’ve never understood people who are late because they hit the snooze button multiple times. Why wouldn’t one always set an alarm for the last possible minute, at which point hitting snooze would be unproductive? What purpose does “snooze” serve if you’ve set the alarm sensibly in the first place?

Yancey Ward May 30, 2011 at 11:38 am

Snooze is for the insensible. This is one of those things you shouldn’t even try understand.

Rahul May 30, 2011 at 3:14 pm

The relative utility of being able to eat a bowl of cereal versus enjoying 5 extra minutes of sleep is highly diurnally variable and best decided on the fly.

anon May 31, 2011 at 3:30 am

Part of the problem is that it is especially uncomfortable to get up from a deep phase of sleep. Setting the alarm earlier and hitting the snooze button allows you to have a quick nap which brings you to a shallower sleep state.

Exactly

Steven May 30, 2011 at 11:37 am

Odd that it’s illegal for common citizens to destroy a fiat currency….

Satinder May 30, 2011 at 11:47 am

Very odd one…. :P

Jim: True for coins.

It’s illegal to destroy paper bills “with intent to render [them] … unfit to be reissued”. (18 USC 333.)

The motivation behind the law is unclear to me, but it is there.
