The culture that is Sweden

…In December, officials from the country’s tourism board decided that they would hand over the reins of their @sweden Twitter account to a different citizen each week.

So far, the project, which has been called “the world’s most democratic Twitter account,” has featured tweets from a female priest, an advertising executive and an organic sheep farmer, Reuters reported.

This week, Sweden’s tweets are from Hanna, “just your average lesbian truck driver.”

“Gosh, I really enjoy being @sweden,” tweeted Hanna. “They’ll have to grab the account out of my dying hands.”

The article is here, hat tip is to Angel Cabrera.  You can follow Hanna (in English) here.

>>“the world’s most democratic Twitter account,”

And yet you selected a female priest, an organic farmer, and a lesbian truck driver.

Democratic: that word, it does not mean what you think it means.

Queen for a day.

A priest, a farmer, and a truckdriver. What is undemocratic about that exactly?

It is pretty clear you don’t understand the term democratic.

I think we are getting somewhere.

5 FYI January 18, 2012 at 11:28 am

Oh yeah, nothing unusual about these. Next in line: a black hockey player, a fat super model and a goth librarian.

Heck, we could do the same in the US. First guest could be one of the peaceful occupy protesters who threw a smoke bomb at the White House yesterday. Good times.

This FYI — he gets it.

7 Gepap January 18, 2012 at 4:41 pm

He gets what, your cheap and intellectually lazy stereotyping?

8 Jim January 18, 2012 at 5:06 pm

No, troll. Not that.

All you need to add is “…walk into a bar” and you have the makings of a good joke.

Which way is the arrow of causality between lesbians and truck driving…..

On other country twitter streams, it seems that @britain is in Ann Arbor, @scotland has never tweeted, germany just started tweeting in the past 24 hours and japan is trying to give its account to the government of japan.

13 IVV January 18, 2012 at 11:43 am

What’s democratic about the account? Is the @sweden for the week voted on? I might be able to see a different form of democracy at work through the account if the citizen is chosen at random by computer, say. How is the @sweden citizen chosen?

14 Rahul January 18, 2012 at 12:10 pm

How long until they choose a twitterer that changes the password and squats on the account?

15 Mork January 18, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Or certain groups make it too dangerous for ethnic Swedes to deliver the tweets, and appoint members of their local community to do it instead?

By overrepresenting and overvaluing oddball minorities — how many female priests are there in Sweden? — the board is silently undervaluing those who are actually representative of Sweden.

17 Saarinen January 18, 2012 at 1:27 pm

About 40 % of the priests in Sweden are female, so I wouldn’t necessarily suggest to call them an “oddball minority”.

18 Jim January 18, 2012 at 2:06 pm

Ah, but the question was not “What percentage of Swedish priests are female?”

It was: “What percentage of Sweden is female priests?”

If you answer the actual question, you will discover they are an oddball minority.

19 Zephyrus January 18, 2012 at 6:14 pm

The issue there is that you can say that about anyone. “How many Swedes are male kindergarten teachers? How many Swedes are dyslexic programmers?” etc.

20 Paul Rain January 24, 2012 at 4:08 am

Male kindergarten teachers are an oddball minority among kindergarten teachers. Not quite the same thing.

21 Gunnar Tveiten January 19, 2012 at 1:43 am

By that logic, just about everyone is an oddball minority.

What percentage is a male farmer ? What percentage is a female programmer ? What percentage is a male bus-driver ? What percentage is a air-traffic-controller ? What percentage is a database-administrator ?

Truly a socialist hell hole. I’ll bet they have no idea what that Twitter account is costing the taxpayers.

23 Bolocko January 18, 2012 at 11:30 pm

If this is what identifies Sweden as a “socialist hell hole”, it raises tremendous interest in checking out the other holes in hell, and also probably hell’s schools and beach-front property.

And I was wondering, how many hedge fund billionaires are living in Sweden?

25 Ted Craig January 18, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Most Swedish billionaires made their money in manufacturing. A hedge fund in Sweden would be tricky because its not a major finance center. But who cares?

26 Anon. January 18, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Sweden has its fair share of hedge funds. Brummer & Partners are gigantic for example.

27 Dave January 18, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Apparently Swedish lesbians are fans of Charlton Heston.
