The economics of compensated pregnancy surrogates, and who wants surrogates?

by on February 20, 2014 at 1:32 pm in Economics, Science, Uncategorized | Permalink

From Anemona Hartecollis, here are some interesting points:

Agencies prefer to contract with surrogates who are married with children, because they have a proven ability to have a healthy baby and are less likely to have second thoughts about giving up the child.

Conversely, gay couples are popular among surrogates. “Most of my surrogates want same-sex couples,” said Darlene Pinkerton, the owner of A Perfect Match, the agency in San Diego that Mr. Hoylman used. Women unable to become pregnant often go through feelings of jealousy and loss, she said. But with gay men, that is not part of the dynamic, so “the experience is really positive for the surrogate.”

Or as her husband, Tom, a third-party reproductive lawyer, put it, “Imagine instead of just having one husband doting on you, you have three guys now sending you flowers.”

The piece is interesting throughout.

Alexei Sadeski February 20, 2014 at 1:40 pm

Surrogacy laws in the US are inequitable towards the recipients.

Alexei Sadeski February 20, 2014 at 1:41 pm

As in biased against the recipients (biological parents).

Skip Intro February 21, 2014 at 9:49 am

Mrs. Intro and I were recently pregnant via gestational surrogate (our embryo carried by surrogate). We did not find the process “biased” – could you elaborate?

Just another MR Commentor February 20, 2014 at 1:42 pm

Surrogacy would become unnecessary if we took the logical step and allow polygamy.

Ray Lopez February 20, 2014 at 2:25 pm

Or, if you come to the Philippines, where the going rate for a surrogacy is half the normal $50k. Several girls have asked me to father their children, for free, but I think it’s a scam (they will ask for money later).

Cliff February 20, 2014 at 2:27 pm

Are you going to shit on every single comment thread?

Ray Lopez February 20, 2014 at 2:32 pm

@Cliff– self nuke, self-troll noted, clever boy! Go to bed now…

Peter Schaeffer February 20, 2014 at 3:53 pm

Cliff,

Mr. Lopez and I don’t always agree. However, his comments on life in the Philippines should be welcomed (presuming they are accurate). Lots of Europeans post comments in these threads. Asians are less common, but given the importance of Asia should be encouraged.

Ray Lopez February 20, 2014 at 9:46 pm

@ Peter Schaeffer – thanks. My comments are accurate. For example, you read about the Philippines being a big exporter of people, but it’s not super easy to leave the country. You need to get by two government bureaucracies, the PH gov’t and the foreign host gov’t. The Middle East, Canada, New Zealand (this year only), sometimes Europe and the USA are the most popular targets, in that order of ease. But it takes often 1 year or more to get the paperwork. Further, to export a baby (either surrogacy or adoption) it’s not that easy: you need permission of both biological parents. In the case of adoption, if the biological father is unknown (as is often the case with bastard kids), a foreigner cannot adopt and take the child out of the country.

You’re not going to get this kind of news unless you live here. Why? Because like Pakistan, the PH has lots of people (179M and 100+M, respectively) but economically it’s a cipher (the GDP of both countries is 67% and about the same, respectively, of Greece, a small country of only 10M). Like in Pakistan (never been there) the PH is in the news only when violence occurs, or if there’s death and destruction (Typhoon “Haiyan”, called Yolanda here, which btw outside the epicenter or eye was not that bad –I lived only an hour drive away from the eye and I’ve seen DC summer storms stronger–and, again contrary to news reports, even in the eye if you had modern concrete structures and/or knew how to swim the fatalities would IMO have been in the dozens, or perhaps 100s, not nearly 10k)

Benjamin Cole February 20, 2014 at 3:47 pm

Polygamy is a right—the cowardice of self-identified “libertarians” in this regard is appalling.
As a libertarian I support polygamy, euthanasia, gambling, recreational drug use and the right of private businesses to hire and do business with who they want to. And the right of property owners to tell the Keystone pipeline “no.”
Sadly, the libertarians of the USA appears to be GOP’ers who want to smoke pot.

Just another MR Commentor February 20, 2014 at 3:51 pm

Ahmen,

although I don’t agree with the GOP bashing, I think technology will render all these things inevitable and the GOP is playing a smart, long game here. The Republican party is the only game in town right now if we are to get proper economic policy and I’m dismayed when I see these sorts of petty fractures.

Brian Donohue February 20, 2014 at 7:25 pm

Dude, independent economic scientists (i.e. not backed by Koch money) are unanimous that Reinhart&Rogoff had an error in an Excel spreadsheet, which proves that debt levels don’t matter, and we owe it to ourselves anyway, and millions could be saved from a future of beans and chalupas if we just unleashed the mother of all fiscal stimuli, but the Kochs won’t stand for it.

prior_approval February 20, 2014 at 11:41 pm

Why this obsession with a pair of Kochs?

Benjamin Cole February 20, 2014 at 8:18 pm

Rural America is a vast pink wonderland, DoD, VA, DHS spending out of control, the Iraqistan follies, the NSA…Terri Schiavo…
No to the GOP: Grifters on Parade.
The Donks are no better…

Alexei Sadeski February 20, 2014 at 6:21 pm

Are there any libertarians who oppose legal polygamy?

dangerman February 20, 2014 at 10:37 pm

No TRUE libertarian, that’s for sure.

Peter Schaeffer February 20, 2014 at 11:26 pm

BC,

‘And the right of property owners to tell the Keystone pipeline “no.”’

The electricity you used to type that comment was transmitted using power lines built with eminent domain. If you don’t like power lines, pipelines, roads, potable water, railroads, etc. (all built with eminent domain), please turn off your lights, stop driving, stop cooking, stop eating, stop drinking, etc.

Benjamin Cole February 20, 2014 at 11:37 pm

Peter–

Yes, but eminent domain for necessary public use.

The Keystone is the seizure of private property for private profit. It is one of the ultimate ironies, that Keystone has become a favorite GOP whipping boy, yet it involves eminent domain for private profit. Or maybe not so ironic—the GOP is just cony capitalism too.

Kind of like when George Bush jr, pushed landowners off of their property, using the power of the state to get their land to build a private, for-profit baseball stadium.

I understand airports, highways, power lines etc. I do not understand taking your property so I can make money with it.

PS When you say stop drinking, I hope you don’t include whiskey!

dan1111 February 21, 2014 at 6:45 am

The railroads were all built by private companies for profit, too. As are many power lines, etc. The right test here is not “does a private company profit?” but “is this providing a public service with specific property needs requiring government intervention?”

Getting oil from point A to point B is clearly necessary in our oil-driven economy and is functionally equivalent to power lines. Both are transporting an energy source over a distance, and eminent domain is needed because you can’t use just any old piece of land, you need a route between the points you are connecting.

I hate the abuse of eminent domain for things like stadiums, too, but this is not that.

(This is not to say the Keystone Pipeline specifically is needed or a good idea–I don’t know. But it clearly is in the class of things eminent domain was intended for.)

“Imagine instead of just having one husband doting on you, you have three guys now sending you flowers.”

Marathon Man February 21, 2014 at 12:40 am

Mr. McKnuckles,

Steve is simply observing the lazy rubric of some ladies to think of behavior in terms of equality of gender, when actually men and women’s behavior in the world is very different.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygamy

“According to the Ethnographic Atlas, of 1,231 societies noted, 186 were monogamous; 453 had occasional polygyny; 588 had more frequent polygyny;” but *only* 4 had polyandry.

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) — A Beijing-based Tibetology scholar has criticized the Dalai Lama’s Friday meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in the White House, saying it was another “anti-China farce.” “Once again, the Dalai Lama slipped into the White House Map Room for a so-called ‘unofficial meeting’ with Obama. This was another farce against China,” said Lian Xiangmin, a researcher with the China Tibetology Research Center, in a signed article.
