Baptists *are* bootleggers, medical marijuana edition

Four of New York’s five medical marijuana companies have filed suit against the state Department of Health to stop it from licensing additional operators to take part in the tightly run state program. The companies argue that the expansion could tank the nascent industry and potentially harm thousands of patients who rely on medical marijuana to treat their ailments.

Something Adam Smith said comes to mind…or was it Cheek and Chong?

“People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion , but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.” ― Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations

I could not find any Cheech and Chong quotes worth re-quoting. I think they were too busy getting stoned to make clever quotes.

Actions are stronger than quotes. Chong agrees with you: greed is good

Well something like Hayek said comes to mind. The aim of legalization is to stop drug dealers shooting each other. Not to make them stop being a$$holes.

The former seems to be working. The latter is probably impossible.

Of course, that’s the logic behind the CON requirement for hospitals. More is less. The logic (more is less) failed when hospitals became for profit corporations. Bill Frist lives!

Under the American regime, greed is good and everything is on sale, even man’s life and soul.

7 Tarrou April 29, 2017 at 8:37 pm

Silly Brazilian, you don’t have souls

8 Thiago Ribeiro April 29, 2017 at 9:49 pm

Yes, we have. We have been chosen by God.

9 The Other Jim April 29, 2017 at 10:11 pm

Just picture Uruguay without the culture, morals or intelligence, and then substitute a greatly inferior language…. and you have Brazil.

10 Thiago Ribeiro April 29, 2017 at 10:28 pm

Except for the fact the Portuguese language is superior to Spanish, as it superior Literature (Camões, Pessoa, Bandeira, Eça, Camilo, Machado, Bilac, Augusro dos Anjos, Lima Barreto, Saramago et al.) proves, and Brazil is superior to so-called Uruguay (actually, the Cisplatine Province of the former Empire of Brazil), which, soon or later, anyway, will rejoin the Fatherland. Most motable foreigners who visited Brazil were impressed by how amazing the nature is and how creative, noble, stoic and intelligent Brazilians are.

11 Ray Lopez April 29, 2017 at 9:00 pm (Greed is Good, Gordon Gekko speech)

Even better is the complete speech:

And Gekko was so right! Back then, even now, forever. One reason that most corporations have built in ‘fat’ that can easily be cut without harming the corporation in any way.

CONs in health care are more common in red states than in blue states. Care to weigh in on that.

Nice government agency you got there. Wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to it.

“You’ve got a nice Army base here colonel,we wouldn’t want anything to appen to it.”

Consumers are always served poorly by additional competition, aren’t they?

Sorry to jump topic, but not terribly far, as the title is something with bootlegging, and this is about a creative walk-around the rules against liquor stores and bars within 500 meters of Indian highways:

I couldn’t wait until the next India post, which should be any day now.
