The Big Society just got smaller

Migrants from outside the European Economic Area will no longer be allowed to work in the UK as chefs in takeaway restaurants, the government has said.

…A similar ban will apply to workers such as hairdressers, beauty salon managers and estate agents from April.

The number of skilled migrants not from the European Economic Area is being capped annually at 21,700.

…The government wants to cut net migration from about 200,000 a year to tens of thousands by 2015.

Here is the story, hat tip goes to Random Variable.

Well, considering British and American intelligence consider Pakistani-origin Brits to be the greatest terror threat to the West, I hope these restrictions include bans on Pak-Brits bringing back their cousins from Pakistan who they've married.

As a UK resident, I'm hoping our informed leaders will fill our harbours with rocks to prevent all those pesky imports too. Soon we'll be rich again!

Many low end Indian restaurants in the UK are actually run (and perhaps owned) by Bangladeshis. The cry has been for a long time that they need more Bangladeshi chefs. True or not, I do not know but the quality of low end Desi food in the UK can't get much worse anyway.

Will make the British unemployment numbers look better during the period of austerity. They should be more confident, because, with austerity, prosperity is just around the corner.

i agree what he said.

tough break for poland. does this make the BNP stronger by (partially) agreeing with them or weaker by co-opting a platform piece from underneath them?

I fail to see how this is a loss for Poland. As far as I know, Poland is part of the EEA. Along with the other central european states, it's now probably the cheapest source of labour for Britain. This change just reduces the competition. Good time to be a Polish plumber.

The ban on low-skilled non-EEA migrants isn't *entirely* stupid. However, the quota on high-skilled migrants definitely is.

Absolute madness. So much for the libertarian routes of the 'big society'. We need skilled scientists and engineers, and sure aren't producing enough of them domestically. I read an article just a few weeks ago talking to a few tech companies from Silicon Glen, and they were all contemplating shifting their R&D functions abroad just to get access to the skills they needed. Being such knowledge intensive enterprises, if they did that they may as well move lock, stock and barrel overseas.

I do not mind pushing myself etc, but what the hell to pay taxes when I can not even the main roads in our area of tight! If they did, then it wouldnt be so bad. I do not think you should expect that each grain Tho way, that is nonsense.

Wow I learned a lot this article. Thank you.

You are right. The cities are getting small.

"The cry has been for a long time that they need more Bangladeshi chefs."

The cry ought to be that UK Bangladeshi unemployment is 2.5 times the average, so why aren't they training the locals.

Alternatively, why not allow women to work in their restaurants, or would that be too much of a culture shock?
