Henry George (The Single Tax) and taxing land value should be a far more preferred tax to either VAT/sales tax or especially avg income.
Even a small 0.1 - 1.0% land value tax, to raise money for the revenue neutral purpose of increasing child deductions, married deductions, and starting new business deductions would be good.

Income isn't zero sum -- but land is. Still, there is so much, that most of the value in land value is in the cities with high productivity.

It's telling that the original constitution required voters to be land-owners -- and those who have their own wealth invested in land are much more likely to support long term sustainable taxation and gov't spending.
