These do not spring easily to mind:
1. Public building: The new Denver art museum, by Daniel Liebeskind.
2. Fiction: I reject Kesey and Michener, so I’ll go with Connie Willis’s Doomsday Book, an excellent piece of fantasy/science fiction.
4. Movie, set in: The Shining comes to mind.
5. Music: I can’t pick John Denver and while I enjoy big band, I think that Glenn Miller, once you get past a few tunes, is overrated. Jello Biafra, of The Dead Kennedys, is an obvious pick here; don’t forget "Holiday in Cambodia."
6. Wild card: Ted Mack, remember his amateur hour? It was a favorite show of my father’s.
The bottom line: Eh. Toss in Lon Chaney and Douglas Fairbanks and it is still Eh. I hope the green chili is good.

Doomsday Book rocks! that is all.
Not a big skiier, are you?
Colorado doesn’t need books and movies. It has the mountains. Nothing else is needed.
Pure Prairie League began in Cincinnati, Ohio. I used to watch them there… heard Amie played in the living room of a friend’s house before it was ever cut. The original lineup was guys from small towns in Ohio. That includes Craig Fuller who is now the singer for Little Feat. He had to leave the group just after Amie became a hit because he got drafted – it was during Vietnam. I think he did alternative service, but it kept him out of the bigtime for a while.
I like jumping over the Colorado River up by Estes park where it’s just a little stream. Makes me feel like Pecos Bill.
Best Colorado band is the Subdudes, dude.
That’s some kind of artist’s impression of the library right? I’m sure it looks ridiculous in real life, just not that ridiculous.
Filmmakers Stan Brakhage and Larry Jordan were both from Colorado. Filmmaker Harry Smith, of Anthology of American Folk Music fame, died there. And I hear its got some nice parks.
When it comes to Colorado, you should also list your favorite microbrewery…
Don’t forget Connie Willis’ other great time-travel book, “To Say Nothing of the Dog.” And I hear she’s working on a third novel set in the same storytelling universe entitled “All-Clear.”
SOUTH PARK. Best show ever.
If you want a book, David Lavender’s “One Man’s West” is superb, and might give you a hint why most of the other choices are way off base.
How about My Favorite Things Utah?
P.S. As for Colorado, what about New Belgium Brewing Company? Specifically their Fat Tire Amber Ale and 1554 Enlightened Black Ale.
Fire Watch (novella/short story, in the Doomsday Book universe) is also fantastic. The book it’s found in also contains Letter from the Clearys, which I think is the aptest story of its genre (telling which genre would spoil it), and All My Darling Daughters, the creepiest story I’ve ever read. (It also includes the 2nd and possibly the 3rd entry in that category).
Look at the bright side, you could have been in some florida “city” like Miami or Tampa. Glass can be half
full! But tend to agree w you on assesment of Denver. Not the most interesting place in the U.S. but not
the most banal.
Bands: Devotchka and Apples in Stereo
And the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is great — even if NORAD is no longer sitting underneath it.
I’ll second the Apples!
music: Velvet Acid Christ
On the whole though it doesn’t surprise me that CO isn’t your thing considering how much I hated VA!
I believe The Shining took place at the Timberline Lodge, in Oregon. It was definitely filmed there; I’m not sure if it is “set” there as well.
