An off-topic econ question, but I’ve been really curious about this & haven’t been able to find the answer: Would the Madoff scheme have a deflationary effect in the same way that a run on the banks did in the early 1900′s? Would the Enron scandal have had a similar effect?

This painting is not even remotely related to Russian Constructivism or Warhol. It’s Jasper Johns-ish, and not particularly hip in my opinion.

It’s also hanging in my office.

Your right-its not a painting. My five year old’s finger paintings have better artistic merit.

It’s also thoroughly unrelated to economics.

I’m still waiting on that explanation of why some finger paintings fetch millions of dollars and others don’t.

I think by Warholish the commenter means sort of brightly colored and vaguely nonsensical and chaotic and dazed/confuzed and trying to make a point through looking at something usually socially rigid (eg map, feminine beauty) in a new way and having maybe some artistic merit in the way its put together but trying to avoid formal technicality and overall sort of preying on past artistic achievements even while perhaps aching a bit inside to really achieve something one’s self and also probably not a good living room picture unless your living room is already really eclectic or it would be the one stand out piece in an ironically formal setting.

The point the commenter made remains a good one. Isn’t all the above sort of crappiness (my opinion on skeptical days, about 60% of days) rather inconsistent with a sort of soviet toughness and cult-of-personality way of doing portraits?

Who cares, actually, if it’s J-Johns? Obama is worshipped by two very disparate camps, the hippy Warholists and the stalinist Che-crowd. One of the two groups is going to be disappointed, I should think.

Ad hominem attacks reveal immaturity.

This doesn’t make any sense! The colors are confusing and vague. Do they correspond to state? Or what?

What’s the matter with Kansas?

Let me confess my fave Johns is his piece for the poet Frank O’Hara, painted after they broke up, and named for O’Hara’s eponymous poem, In Memory of My Feelings. But going to the big Johns show, Gray, this year I became quite fond of his newer works from the Catenary series.

For those who like a little more humor, try O’Hara’s Ambition, which some say refers to Johns (“if only he were in some useful occupation. . .oh Johnny”).

Thanks for the picture. I was thinking recently that you don’t put very many pictures on your blog, but I enjoyed this one…

The purest game of status competition you are likely to see. Who wins? I say it’s the guy who points out that this is the purest game of status competition you are likely to see. Meta-Po-Mo. Check mate.
