The culture that is Sweden

Sweden’s The Local reports: A Swedish heavy metal fan has had his musical preferences officially classified as a disability. The results of a psychological analysis mean that the metal lover can now count on having his income supplemented by state benefits.

Roger TullgrenPhoto#3, Photo#4, Photo#5), 42, from Hässleholm in southern Sweden, has just got a new job as a dishwasher at a local restaurant.

Because heavy metal dominates so many aspects of his life, the Employment Service has agreed to pay part of Tullgren‘s salary. His new boss meanwhile has given him a special dispensation to play loud music at work.

“The fact that I am so into music has affected my work situation to the extent that I have had to quit some jobs,” he said.

Here is the link and for the pointer I thank Marcela V.

Message to death metal fans: If you don’t like the US, move to Sweden.

Sounds like a win-win to me. I’m sure it cost the Swedish government more when the guy was on the welfare rolls than now when it just has to subsidize his salary as a dishwasher.

Except for the supply response of head-banging dishwashers

This was the talk of the town here four years ago… I wonder what happened to the poor guy.

This is a 4 year old story that is most likely not correct. It is necessary to have a medical diagnos to get this type of welfare, and “music lover” is not such a diagnos. Hence, if you would have access to his (as I assume, classified) journal you would probably detect a proper diagnos.

Being a state subsidized dishwasher heavy metal fan is morally superior to being an investment banker. Neither is anything to be proud of but at least some dishes are clean after this guy is done with work.

But clearly the investment banker has arbitrary flaws which need state subsidizing as well.

What is the problem, exactly?

His quotes read like something from the Onion.

………..which might bolster his case for deserving psychiatric help after all.

The sad thing is, he’s probably perfectly sincere in feeling like his condition is totally beyond his control. People self-modify their preferences in response to incentives, but this occurs at an entirely subconscious level.

Seems intuitively correct. Do you know of any research on that phenomenon?

Alternatively, he just totally believes it. Like a schizophrenic believes demons are out to kill him. The mind is a strange beast.

I guess lots of bureaucrats are metal-heads in Sweden. Also, the field of psychology might not be a net contributor to any economy.
