The Making of an Economist, Redux

That book is by David Colander of Middlebury.  Can I do better than to quote that weird blogger guy who wrote the blurb?:

The Making of an Economist, Redux is self-recommending.  David Colander’s work on the profession of economics is by far the best we have.  A significant follow-up to his book of twenty years ago, it will become the standard account of what economics graduate school is like.

This book isn’t for all MR readers, but if you think it might be for you, it is.  Here is the book’s home page.

The only problem I would have with the publicity on this certainly useful book
is that there is this implication that the earlier one altered practices in econ
grad schools. Certainly the earlier one triggered a lot of discussion about things
like too much pointless math and so forth, but it is not obvious that econ grad
programs went and did much too change their programs in response to those discussions.

One theme in the new one is the complete incoherence and irrelevance of much of the
current teaching of macro at the grad level. Will it lead to a change in that? I am
not holding my breath, although I happen to agree with Dave C. on the matter.

I read the older version and found it helpful in deciding about graduate school. Some of it seemed questionable–if I recall correctly, the authors argued that, with the exception of the University of Chicago, most students in the top programs were secretly disappointed that grad school was not preparing them to become the next John Kenneth Gailbraith or Kenneth Boulding. While my subsequent conversations with econ grads pretty much contradicted that argument, they did indicate that the book was accurate in its depiction of how econ programs diverged from the expectations that many applicants brought to them.
