A simple theory of being single and male in Washington

Michael Rosenwald, from his WaPo interviews with me, blogs an outtake.  He cites my words on the dating market in Washington, D.C.:

I think it's better to date here if you are male. Government attracts a disproportionate share of intelligent women. I've never lived in New York, but there are so many celebrities, billionaires. If you are a guy in New York, there's always another guy that crushes you on the scale. Here, there are all these politicians but they are really out of commission for the most part — or if they fool around, it's with interns. You don't have to compete with them. The people who are really high status are off the market. As a male in Washington, you can be high in status fairly easily without the true very high status competing. In New York or L.A., there are movie stars and directors. Even if a woman can't be with a movie star, women can still say, 'Gee, this guy or that guy is not a movie star or a director.' There's lobbyists and lawyers here, a lot of them. You can be more interesting than that. This is a great place to live.

I'm sure this guy has never seen blond pubic hair.

Mostly true. There is a lot of female talent in D.C., with relatively little male competition. The city attracts smart and thin women who are passionate about making a postive difference and who would also like to have fun. The men attracted to the city are not as numerous, and many of the ones who are have napolean complexes, complete with low relative heights. An average-height, decent-looking guy is in high demand here, and will seem to be among the most manly of the city (the only exception being if you are near the Marine barracks in NE).

The claim that government attracts a disproportionate share of intelligent ANYTHING is ridiculous. Government inherently attracts stupid people, because smart people can make more money and have more impact in the private sector. The desire to make the most money you can given your talent/intelligence doesn't simply stop with men.

Secondly, how many politicians are there really in D.C? Sure, more than in any other city, but still, a tiny fraction of the population. So eliminating politicians from the dating pool because they only fool around with interns doesn't do much for your ratios.

There is a lot of truth here. What it shows is that status is influential in competition by males for mates, (2) status can be based on wealth but is also created from non-monetary factors, and (3) males in or around the federal government lack as much wealth as they deem optimal in this competition, so they are motivated to minimize the advantages of males with more wealth. Which provides the impetus for expanding government and financing it through progressive taxation. and

"Government attracts a disproportionate share of intelligent women."

Are men especially attracted to intelligent women??????

Amen Steve. I used to be a consultant and flew out to DC on a regular basis and was always happy to get back to the Midwest dating scene; I can only hear so much ignorant politically correct fashionable movement-of-the-moment drivel coming out an intelligent sexy bimbo. It's so bad in DC that they piss you off even faster than you can tune them out and take them home for a one nighter.

DC might be a great pickup place for a coastal elite but us folk in the middle are happy with common sense even if it comes shaped like a mac truck.

@ Oderus Urungus ... thanks for making me smile today, not the comment but the band reference :)

There is a nice amount of good looking, money making men in NYC. However, no matter how many successful, good looking guys there are in Manhattan there is an absolute ocean of attractive, young women in New York that is much larger than the male pool.

As one of the previous posters alluded to earlier, this city is a rat race for the ladies. There are so many of them in competition for a smaller pool of guys. I would say that New York puts much more competitive pressure on women than men. It is the only place Ive lived where girls will approach you on a consistent basis at the bars.

Peter, I saw some on an off-night once.

Sure there's more women and less men...but in NY, I see attractive men. Here it's like a guy who's a 6 anywhere else becomes a 10. I've seen really beautiful women with the homliest guys and then I remember that line, "DC is Hollywood for ugly people." True dat.

If you are male than you can be high in status fairly easily without the true very high status competing. There are so many of them in competition for a smaller pool of guys.

As a political consultant/lobbyist who reguarly scores, I can assure you that the intelligence
of these women is greatly overstated. They conform to the well-known observation that, the
smartest thing that ever came out of a woman's mouth was Einstein's cock.

My experience is that guys like you "score" with the less intelligent women in DC. The intelligent women who I know in DC can spot BS like your's miles away.

And political consultants/lobbyists/lawyers are a dime a dozen in DC, and most of them are just not that interesting, nor are most of them that intelligent (even though most of them seem to believe they are the cat's meow).

However, the women in DC are not as good looking as the women in NYC.

I've seen these "women" at the clubs in DC and NoVA. They look like candidate's for What Not to Wear, The Swan, and The Biggest Loser.

You can see the St. Cloud, Des Moines, Skokie, and Manhattan (Kansas) all over them. One gets the clear impression it's their first time out of the house. The clubs there have all the feel of an enlisted club on an Army post where every daddy's little girl is a pretty Queen for a Day.

Yep, it's a great market guys. Go get 'em! It's like shopping at Ross - exclusive brands and great deals but you may have to sort through the pile of rejects for a while.

Also, the drug scene in DC is very weak. Shockingly, you can't even acquire a good stash at the Mexican consulate!

Why would I want to attract a woman who'd reject me for not being a movie star or famous film director?

Getting that sounds like a recipe for misery.

(And contra previous comments, note that "liking a shaved pubic area" does not mean "pedophile"; pedophiles want partners who are entirely pre-pubescent.

A pedophile who is after little girls, thus, would not want the "stereotypical" adult woman with large breasts and a shaved crotch, but one with narrow hips and no breasts to speak of.

I don't understand the weird obsession with hair or its lack and screaming "pedophilia" about it, but just like the term's abuse for sexual attraction to post-pubescents who are just under-age in whatever jurisdiction [eg. 17 year olds sending each-other naked pictures gets reported as 'kiddie porn prosecution', despite the former's original definition as actual pedophilic pornography, which is rightly reviled and made illegal].

Could we not confuse "I don't like it" with "it's closet pedophilia"? If a girl or a boy wants to lose the hair Down There, there are plenty of common motives that have nothing to do with pre-pubescence.)

Jack,

David Boaz gave you an STD, didn't he?

Here's what Roissy in DC has to say about all this:

http://roissy.wordpress.com/2010/05/16/dc-is-not-a-chick-mecca/

While I would trust Cowen's armchair expertise on most subjects concerning behavioral economics, Roissy has been in the DC trenches garnering real world data for at least a decade.

I agree with NRWO, a woman's ability to swallow my pork-sword is what really matters, at the end of the day.

If you didn't go to Georgetown or Yale nor do you have a swanky job on the hill, you better have some solid game to get by here. DC is full of stuck-up bitches that turn their nose up to anyone not smart enough for them.

That being said, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqXi8WmQ_WM
