Pakistan update

1. Militants kill 41 in the Peshawar region.

2. Adulterated cough syrup kills 33, the second such incident in recent times.

3. Pakistan lifts its YouTube ban, but for three minutes only.

Those are the headlines immediately visible today.

Less widely reported is that during 2012, the Pakistani stock index — namely the KSE-100 — is up 48% in local currency and 37% in U.S. dollars.

#2 may not be bad syrup; they might have drunk too much of it.

Indeed; the article specifically says that officials had not determined whether or not the cough syrup was adulterated.

Though I'm not sure about the lethal overdose range of the drug. In the case of ecstasy, deaths are essentially always from adulterated versions, as overdoses are very unlikely to kill. I do find that the media will make the reverse headline mistake of blaming "overdoses" when it is adulterated versions. Possibly because the truth would make it seem like legalization would help by eliminating impure drugs.

If the cough syrup also contained acetaminophen (paracetamol) or other drugs, then overdoses could easily cause death.

Is it plausible that 33 people all decided to drink too much cough syrup at once?

Technically all poisonings are overdoses...

If they were all drinking it to get high, as indicated in the article, and they were only a small fraction of such doing so, it is plausible.

And Pakistan beats India again in cricket. Having unearthed 7'1" left handed bowler (pitcher)

The ban on youtube would remain for some time, in my estimation, at least before the election (approx. May 2013), as the electoral benefits from such token gestures for politicians are quite high. Also many older parents are satisfied in thinking that their kids are not exposed to something "unwarranted".
On the other hand most internet users easily circumvent the ban, it is only a minor inconvenience for them, no one is monitoring, no punishment etc. for accessing youtube . So there are not many serious complains, because effectively their is no ban, just a more roundabout and slow connection to youtube.

I can't believe Pakistan doesn't have better cough syrup controls.

What would you recommend to someone who only has access to YouTube for 3 minutes? A fragment of PSY Gangnam? MRUniversity?

A montage of Yves Smith animal photographs and they can link to her articles!

Otherwise, I would recommend Rabbit Seasoning Pronoun Trouble of Tex Avery King Size Canary (Over three days!)

A podcast on how to use your time wisely?

Since we're talking about an entire country, Nyan Cat. Everywhere. Preferably on all televisions.

Or Rick Astley.

Is it possible for MR to maintain some sane standards and stop calling them militants? They are terrorists. They know they are terrorists. Terrorism is what they do. Calling them militants weakens and down plays their crimes.

It is not a case of one man's terrorist being another man's freedom fighter. It is perfectly possible to be both. It is simply that if we maintain no standards, we will lose.

At first I thought #1 said that _Mutants_ had killed 41 people. I'm not sure that would be less sad, but it would at least be more interesting.

How easy is it for foreigners to put their money into Pakistan's stock market, and how easy is it to get money back? And how easy is it (politically) for the government to make it much more difficult to repatriate stock market profits if things go south in a hurry?
