Betting markets in as many different critters as you need

Last Wednesday, MyBookie, an online sportsbook, invited gamblers to place wagers on the summer migration patterns of nine great white sharks. The company’s website displayed odds on various aspects of each shark’s travel itinerary, using data mined from Ocearch, a nonprofit that’s been tracking the animals’ movements for years. An interactive map on Ocearch’s website monitors shark migration in near-real time, providing gamblers ample fodder for wagers — akin, perhaps, to a virtual horse race, conducted entirely at sea.

With most public sports out of commission because of the coronavirus pandemic, the betting market has been thin in recent months. Wagering on sharks could give gamblers an outlet, and some conservationists wonder if it might result in positive press for oft-maligned great whites.

Will any betting site give me odds that crime in the US will go through the roof in the coming months as the police are losing much of the means and the will to fight crime?

The means: you know, executing people at the spot they have subdued.

Well J, we don't need a betting market if you are willing to just make a side bet with me. I am willing to bet that violent crime will be higher in Q3-Q4 2020 than it was in Q3-Q4 2019. We can agree among ourselves what the criterion will be so that only a salient change will be a win for me. I agree that it is only fair to net out violent crime by police. Bet must be at least 3 figures to interest me. Tyler has my contact details, if you are interested contact him, I hope but cannot promise that he will connect us.

can we get in on this bet?
"Greater New York Black Lives Matter president Hawk Newsome warned that if the United States “doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it.”
the number of chicago shootings on weekdays are rising to weekend chicago shooting numbers.
you wont find that in the newwoketime.com or npr

There's plenty of sport to be betting on at the moment.

Today alone there are 582 table tennis, 114 tennis, seventy-seven football, fifteen hockey, nine volleyball, fifteen esports, seventeen darts, twelve beach volleyball, and twelve basketball matches as well as 130 horse races.

And that's a Thursday. There are 320 football matches on Saturday. People have no problem finding something to bet on.

Maybe if Trump had handled more efficiently the COVID issue, we would have been able to reopen the economy and have proper sports events just like Brazil, whose most popular team, Flamengo, resumed its participation at the Rio de Janeiro State Soccer Championship with a 3X0 win. I hope we have learned that leadership quality matters and that reality TV stars are not real leaders.

The Federal government did fine, it is state govts that biffed it. Look specifically to NY/NJ/PA/MA/MI

I'll give you, CDC and FDA's initial bureaucracy hurt us, but they do that every time. There is no will to eliminate or reform the GS, so it is unlikely that will change.

I think our initial response to the crisis was lackluster. If we had taken a leaf frommBrazil's playbook, we would be in a much better situation.

The stock market has been like a casino during the pandemic, with wide gyrations triggered by events having little to do with the companies or the broader economy and more to do with expectations of the gamblers' (investors') behavior. Of course, this has been the trend for a while, as analysts have been replaced by computer engineers and quants who mine the data for clues as to what the gamblers (investors) will do tomorrow. I know a very successful investor who was one of the first if not the first to rely exclusively on data to make investment choices, little signals that predict market movement (i.e., investor behavior), all run with a warehouse filled with computers churning through the data. And economists are on board too, with an increasing number of them relying on signaling to predict what will happen in the broader economy tomorrow, what I call the illusion school of economics. I bet(!) it's no coincidence that Cowen's immediately preceding blog post is about the census and census data.
