How to boost employment

The Wi-Fi kiosks were designed to replace phone booths and allow users to consult maps, maybe check the weather or charge their phones. But they have also attracted people who linger for hours, sometimes drinking and doing drugs and, sometimes, boldly watching pornography on the sidewalks.

Now, yielding to complaints, the operators of the kiosks, LinkNYC network, are shutting off their internet browsers.

That is from Patrick McGheehan at the NYT.

"boldly watching pornography"

in some news reports, it reads "homeless men masturbating while watching porn"

I did find the adverb "boldly" odd modifying "watching". Thanks for clarifying.

Porn watching just signal the users could do whatever they wanted with the terminals. Morals aside, this is bad for security. It's good there are not much homeless hackers out there profiting from the untraceability of these terminals.

Economics 101: Tragedy of the commons.

The unemployed are just feckless, are they? Reverting to 19th century morality in a desperate retreat to fit into the upcoming Trumpworld, are we?

Upcoming. Trump world ?? No this is present day DeBlasio utopia

Pass that joint over to me, Millian.

Anyhow, more evidence of the propriety of the old adage, "No good deed ever goes unpunished."

'But they have also attracted people who linger for hours, sometimes drinking and doing drugs and, sometimes, boldly watching pornography on the sidewalks.'

The poor are truly different, aren't they? Most people have the good taste to use Grindr or Ashley Madison or various porntube channels from the privacy of their own phone, and when getting 'bolder,' can still enjoy the privacy of their own car or office.

They also defecate and urinate in the streets, but not because of lack of toilets.

Holy cow, prior_, we agree!

The worst poverty isn't pecuniary, it's moral.

Is the wi-fi kiosk a metaphor for the "public square" (or town square, piazza, or other variations)? Is the political speech often associated with the public square equivalent to masturbation?

Is incessant, inane posting in the MR comments on almost every topic the equivalent to masturbation? It's something that I'm sure feels good but it's not pleasant for others to witness.

Simply offering free wi-fi seems better to me. These days almost everyone is carrying around a device of some sort, even the homeless.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

“But when something has an outcome that you completely weren’t anticipating, then you have to go back and reconsider. Maybe other cities don’t have this problem.”

How clueless are these New York officials? Have they read any of the research on internet addiction? Unbelievable how out of touch these people are.

"The switch, announced on Wednesday, is a case study in unintended consequences, commendable goals gone somewhat awry."

So, to paraphrase, 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions'.

>somewhat awry

People building encampments on major public streets, doing drugs and watching porn and masturbating all day, and the New York Times is here to tell you that the Government's plan has gone "somewhat awry."

I don't see how any of this is unexpected.

Someone in DC tried to implement paid porta-potties about 25 years ago. Rights groups demanded they be handicap accessible, and then people starting having sex in the handicap accessible ones. They shut the whole project down.

It's not just that some people will abuse the commons. It's that the occasional abusers are protected and enabled by a bunch of outsiders with their own agenda.

"It’s that the occasional abusers are protected and enabled by a bunch of outsiders with their own agenda." Which outsiders? Maybe you just aren't meant to have such things.

De Blasio and liberals everywhere show once again how they have no model for reality. Why aren't people demanding the resources wasted come directly from De Blasio and his cronies?

Liberals, worst people in the world.

Indeed, we need all the resources we can get to police our public restrooms for gender nonconformists, which has suddenly become a critical issue even though sex-change operations were done back in the 1960's.

I live in an area with a lot of these kiosks. They are 99% used by the homeless. On many occasions I've seen them pull up crates, or even actual chairs, and sit there for hours. Even if a tourist wanted to make us of a kiosk I think there is a good chance they'd be too scared too.

It boggles the mind, that some planner (presumably with a decent paying job) thought this would be a good use of funds.

In my neighborhood they are used by tourists and by hipsters who've depleted their batteries playing Pokemon Go.

A Starbucks I frequented had a persistent problem with a handful of the homeless setting up camp around the building using the WiFi. I have no idea if they were using it for porn or not, but I wouldn't be surprised either.

How long before someone files suit claiming that the homeless have a civil right to the kiosks?

Put up some privacy barriers, add some disposable wet-towel dispensers and massage chairs (for tired strollers of course), and pretty soon you have the ingredients for the Orgasmatron in the movie Sleeper (1973).

Actually it seems to have been funded by Google (sorry 'Alphabet').

I don’t worry about employment or anything like that at all since I mostly do Forex trading; it’s a business which creates huge opportunity for making money, if we do it correctly. I am able to do it all nicely which is to do with OctaFX broker, it’s the number one company and got excellent all-round benefits including having lovely educational setup which covers all departments and really helps up with working and allows me the room to work with ease and comfort.
